Clayton has no institutions of higher learning in its boundaries, but is located near a number of colleges and universities, including Johnston Community College, Duke University, North Carolina State University, and more.
The community now known as Clayton was built on a road cut by Governor Tryon’s troops around the year 1770 during the American Revolution. Almost 100 years later, the railroad arrived to town, and the town was renamed from “Stalling’s Station” to Clayton at its incorporation in 1869.
After the Civil War, the railroad expanded, which allowed businesses, such as lumber mills and cotton gins, to flourish as a result. By the early 1900s, Clayton had become a major hub for the cotton, watermelon and tobacco industries. In 1907, the Raleigh Evening Times wrote that there was “more money per capita in Clayton than any city its size in the world.”
Eventually, the state of North Carolina transitioned from its agricultural economy to an industrial, service-oriented one, and Clayton followed suit. The establishment of Research Triangle Park, and the impressive growth of the state’s capital, made Clayton a desirable and thriving satellite city.
