History
During the early 1840s, Thomasville was born when North Carolina senator John W. Thomas traded two horse-drawn wagon loads of bacon for 1,100 acres of land that would lie next to the proposed new railroad tracks. Several years later, industrious citizens began making chairs for both personal home use and extra income, thus creating several chair companies. In 1904, the Thomasville Chair Company was created.
The community eventually became more prominent, and even attracted former President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1960, while he did a “whistle stop” standing on Thomasville’s Big Chair. The furniture industry changed over time with the relocation of several factories, causing a shift for the town’s economy and overall focus. However, the city’s rich history is still seen and celebrated to this day.
The Mitchell House Museum was founded in 1982, and was the first cottage on the Mills Home Campus, the original campus of the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina.
