History
The area now known as Shelby was once populated by Cherokee people, and Spanish explorers traversed the area as early as 1540, but did not stay. In the 1750s, Scots-Irish and German settlers arrived from Pennsylvania and Virginia, and many stayed and launched farmsteads and trading establishments. The town was officially incorporated in 1843, and was named Shelby after Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero who played a pivotal role in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Over time, the town extended in a circle, creating a quarter-mile circuit from the public square.
Growth in Shelby was slow before the introduction of the railroad and development of roads and bridges. In the beginning, many residents held jobs as carpenters, wheelwrights, silversmiths, gunsmiths, blacksmiths, grocers, butchers and tailors. The post-Civil War Reconstruction era opened the door to investment opportunities, and the Carolina Sewing Machine Company was established at the old Shelby Foundry. During the 1920s, Shelby experienced the cotton boom, and by 1947, Shelby was a thriving town until the textile industry slowed between 1950 and 1975. Today, Shelby is a peaceful and quiet town with a preserved history, evident in the restored historic buildings and homes.
