History
In 1824, John and Charlotte McGehee established a 600-acre plantation in the Lower Piedmont and called it Green Wood. The city echoed the plantation’s name as it was chartered in 1857. Greenwood became one of the leading rail centers in the state, as nine railroad tracks crossed through the city’s central business district at one point. The textile industry began to boom in the early 1900s when railroads saw a decline as automobiles took over.
During the Great Depression in the 1930s, Lake Greenwood was created as a Public Works Administration project after the timber on the basin was cleared by the Civilian Conservation Corps to form the lake. Starting in the 1960s, larger corporations set up facilities in the Greenwood area, such as Solutia, FujiFilm and Carolina Pride. Greenwood is also home to the Park Seed Company, one of America’s oldest and largest mail-order seed companies, which moved to South Carolina in 1924.
