History
Laurens County was first settled by a man named John Duncan, who arrived to the area in 1753. The county was named for Revolutionary War hero, Henry Laurens of Charleston. By 1809, the county was thriving as more homes and businesses were built around Holland’s Store, located in the eastern part of the county. The community was known as “Five Points” which changed to Clinton when the town was incorporated in 1852 after the introduction of the railroad. The town was named after Henry Clinton Young, a lawyer from Laurens who helped lay out the first streets.
In 1864, William Plummer Jacobs, a young Presbyterian minister crusading for temperance, arrived to Clinton and was responsible for establishing Presbyterian College and Thornwell Home and School, which is now Thornwell Orphanage.
The cotton industry was successful in Clinton in the late 1800s, during which time several cotton mills were erected. In later years, the economic focus of Clinton shifted to hallmarks such as Presbyterian College, Thornwell Home for Children, Whitten Center, Clinton Mills, numerous churches, banks, a hospital and a weekly newspaper.
