History
William R. Davie was an officer in the Revolutionary War, a delegate to the 1787 Constitutional Convention, and North Carolina’s governor from 1798 to 1799. In 1836, a new county was formed out of the existing Rowan County, and was named Davie County in his honor. Three years later, the area nicknamed “Mocks Old Field” became the county seat of Davie and was incorporated as Mocksville. During the 1700s, Mocksville was home to pre-colonial frontiersman Daniel Boone and his parents, and his father served as a Justice of the Peace for Mocksville. Visitors can see the graves of Boone’s parents and his brother at the Joppa Cemetery.
