History
Originally called Maysworth, Cramerton is named for Stuart Cramer, a textile engineer who established May Mills in the early 20th century and created a “model mill village”. The paved streets, concrete sidewalks and homes with electricity and indoor plumbing created a model for other mill villages around the South. Cramer built Maymont, a home modeled after an English manor house, on a mountain that was later named Cramer Mountain. Its innovative design featured materials native to the mountain and a swimming pool serving as a reservoir if the mills were to catch fire. Maymont held many parties for the elite, including Presidents Herbert Hoover and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Cramerton ultimately transitioned from a mill village to a residential community, particularly attractive for Charlotte commuters.
